Walworth Council of Churches Announces 2012 Lenten Services

New Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) at Zion!

The Leadership Council has purchased an AED for Zion. The AED is an emergency medical device that is used to compliment CPR in case of cardiac arrest. Kim Valone is completing the paperwork for application/protocols for the new AED. This is a lengthy process and there are many regulations including having people at Zion trained by the Red Cross in the use of the AED/CPR.  Kim and Lynn Saxton have expressed interest in the training.  Kim will also extend the invitation to the congregation and arrange things with the Red Cross. The new AED is stored in the Adult Sunday School room.

Note: one does not need to be trained to use the AED. It uses simple audio and visual directions for its proper use. [ Learn more about AEDs ]

News from the Walworth Council of Churches

Lida volunteered Zion to host Easter Sunrise service.  Todd said she could do so if she was willing to do the early service.  We will also offer a breakfast and many helpers will be needed.  The Lenten schedule of Wednesday services is out; we don’t have it yet.  The Canaltown Chorale Christmas concert was well attended and brought in more money than in previous years.  The theme for the Festival in the Park will be “Christmas in July.”  Caroling in the park will occur and Lida would like to include people with special needs in this.  She indicated that there are several group homes in the area.

United Methodist From Across New York and the North East Face Disaster and Recovery

Bishop Marcus Matthews, the Resident Bishop of the Upper New York Area of the United Methodist Church issued the following letter on August 30, 2011:

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The rains came down and the floods came up but the house of our Lord stands firm. As thewaters recede, our neighbors need our help. Many homes have been destroyed and will need to be rebuilt; others will need repair. I am appealing to the many generous members and congregations across the Upper New York Annual Conference to support the rebuilding that lies ahead. In the days and weeks ahead, you and your congregation can help in two significant ways: [ Read the enire letter by clicking here .... ]

Final Thoughts From Your Pastor

The days of drive by, or drive in Christianity are over. It isn’t enough to give praise to God on Sunday and act like everyone else the other six days of the week.

The horrific scandal at Penn State indicates to me a moral failure of Christians who failed to step in, stop terrible crimes, report terrible crimes, and prosecute terrible crimes against children. The outrageous abuse of disabled adults locked in a Philadelphia furnace room tells me that we have failed to both spread a Gospel of love and reach out to those who are most vulnerable in society. Had good Christians insisted their children attended Sunday school and church every week, the collective morality of our society wouldn’t be co-existing at the bottom of the barrel with the approval rating of congress.

Life long Christian moral values don’t eliminate sin, but it sure reduces the likelihood of such abominable transgressions from starting in the first place.

Don’t just hear, think about, and discuss the Gospel on Sunday morning; put it to practice! Starting this holiday season, consider doing one more act of good works in your world. Move it! by volunteering your time, or by donating your money. We’ve put up wonderful charities on our church web site for many years – Fairport Baptist Home, Grace Urban Ministries, Walworth Council of Churches Good Samaritan Fund, Cameron Community Ministries, The Good Samaritan Closet, the Protestant Chapel Community, the Mental Health Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, and Heritage Christian Services. Make it a point to donate your time and/or your money. Make it a family affair. Invite your friends. Take it viral!

God loves you, and so do I.

Pastor Todd
